On 11 February 2016, Karmenu Vella, EU Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and Ferd Crone, Mayor of Leeuwarden, invite European Mayors to the agenda setting event “Mayors and Water”
Participants will convene in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, to develop a strategy to safeguard the future of water in European cities. The “Mayors and Water” event follows the EIP Water 2016 Conference, taking place on 10 February in the same city.
Why such an event?
European cities already face diverse water challenges: groundwater over-exploitation, historic pollution, emerging compounds, sustainable financing of water infrastructure, droughts and floods, and more. All of these are further aggravated by population growth and climate change.
