Can external geopolitical reasons steer a decision-making process on technological directions to take? To which extent can internal administrative, social and industrial structures, informal and formal economy, local and imported cultural and knowledge systems affect such a process? What are today the threats to the EU digital sovereignty that require further analysis and regulation at EU level? Should the EU develop a common market strategy to counteract potential technological risks?

“Towards the Age of a multi-connected intelligence”

Digital transformation will impact all sectors of our economy, from agriculture to public services, from industry to public administration and radically change the way we live. These evolutions will be enabled by advances in AI, improved cybersecurity, reinforced connectivity through 5G, edge computing, sensors, power management etc. New opportunities are arising from such a disruptive transition. But the huge and urgent need to transfer, store and analyse vast amounts of data generated in this new technology context requires a level of secure connectivity and dependable interoperability which was unknown and unmanageable through the available infrastructures.   What solutions will be required for Europe to capture this window of opportunity, accelerate innovation value chains and shorten the time-to market?

Impact - The ECSEL JU contribution to connectivity and interoperability solutions

Followed by a debate with audience

“Synergies and complementarity: reducing disparities in RD&I in the EU”

The ECS sector is characterized by a very strong competition at global level. And the level of investments required is on the order of trillions of Euros and keeps growing with each generation of products. Prioritize research and innovation in EU, national and regional budget as well as optimise investment is crucial not only for facing massive investments heavily supported by local government (e.g. “Made in China 2025”). But also to try reducing disparities in RD&I in the EU. Synergies and complementarity among programmes at all levels could efficiently respond to a very dynamic market as ECS in continuous evolution. How to optimize EU/National/Regional policies and investments and capitalize results? How should we reinforce the existing strengths? How to set long-term investments and put policies in place that can also drive to a high degree of cohesion in the EU?
