Workshop for Mathematics and Digital Science

A workshop for Mathematics and Digital Science organised by DG CONNECT (Unit C1 – eInfrastructure) took place in November, with around 50 mathematicians with expertise in the mathematical disciplines related to big data and High Performance Computing (HPC) from around Europe, and even from the US. Notably, this included also the Chair of European Research Council, Dr Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, as well as the Joint Research Centre. The workshop was preceded by an open online consultation.

The aim was to identify topics and areas which are of relevance to the European development of HPC and Big Data analysis and which could be of interest or give inspiration to the planning of the Horizon2020 Work Programme 2016-2017.

The report covers both the on-line consultation results and the Workshop conclusions. It points out the importance of mathematical support on one hand to HPC development towards exa-scale, and on the other mathematical solutions for pattern recognition and simulation on big data. Additionally it recognised the needs for an open access knowledge repository for mathematical algorithms, software and solutions, aimed at industry to support innovation as well as research, as well as the lack of a cross disciplinary mathematical network for supporting European research and industry.

The workshop organised itself into small subgroups who focussed on topics of their choice within the title. This resulted in nine additional short reports on topics ranging from how to communicate mathematics to Modelling Simulating and Optimisation and industrial mathematics and HPC. They are attached to the report.
